[Today, the kitchen/dining area is occupied by a different flavor of Kaito, who has five cards strewn out in a line on the table before him, each one face down. He's reaching out and flipping them over to reveal the faces in random order, before he turns them over again.

Ace of spades, queen of hearts, four of diamonds, ten of clubs, two of hearts, and back to the ace which has mysteriously been transformed to a king of diamonds.

He continues this random pattern for a while, the five cards on the table changing their faces each time he flips them over.

Until he stops suddenly and lifts a card up to frown at it]

... damn it, this wasn't supposed to be a Jack, it was supposed to be another ace.

[he sighs and mumbles to himself as he collects the five cards and produces the rest of the deck from (seemingly) nowhere to shuffle it]

Might as well try again.

[Even the best magicians need practice]

[Conan has to go eat sometime and when he does, he sees Kaito. For a few moments, he doesn't pay him any mind.

Then he paused.

And looked at him again.]

....that's different.

[Kaito didn't notice Conan at all when he entered the kitchen. He was entirely too focused on getting this. damn. trick. right]

[He stared for a few moments longer before he walked over, pulling a chair up to sit across from him.]

Pretty focused, huh? Trying not to use magic?

[Conan's voice cuts through his concentration, and as he glances up in surprise, one of the cards slips from his fingers and flutters to the ground.

Cue muffled curse, but he doesn't bend down to pick it up again]

What are you talking about? It is magic! [well, it was sleight-of-hand, but he was hoping this Conan wasn't referring to his actual magic]

Stage magic. I was talking about the real magic you have. [Quit blunt about it too.]

[he leans down to scoop the card off the ground, poker face reconstructed]

I don't know what you're talking about. [if there's one thing he's kept from people it's the fact that he's an art spirit]

It's different from the Kaito of my world. I almost didn't notice at first, but you've got a lot more in you. You feel kind of like a kami. [He looked amused more than anything.]

[he's shuffling the deck again, and after a moment he lifts a hand to pull at something invisible in the air. Conan's glasses zoom off of his face, and Kaito catches them, twirling them around his finger deftly]

Kami, huh? I've never heard that one before. [he's grinning again, but there's something about it that seems suspicious]

How'd you know?

[He looked surprised at that action, then annoyed, and then rolled his eyes, resting his chin on his hand.]

Kind of, but it's different. The power level is more on that level than the usual ghosts or spirits. But it's different from Akako's, so it means you've probably got some blood that isn't really human in you.

I know because I have magic. I've been developing it since it seems that will help me in my goal.

[And, of course, an audience. Have an Aoko poking her head in the door, drawn by the muttering]

Eh?

[oh, just the person she was looking for!]

Kaito!

[good, he can take her home, she was in the middle of making dinner when this place snatched her :|]

[the voice registers almost immediately as familiar, but he doesn't look up from his sleight-of-hand game]

Hang on, Aoko.

[he will get it riiiiight this time]

[enters the room, peering at the cards]

What are you doing?

Practicing.

[his answer is a little curt, only because he doesn't want to mess up again]

[she's about to ask "Practicing what?" but thinks twice about it, closes her mouth, and folds her hands behind her back while she watches]

[He continues to flip the cards, and after a few moments--]

Damn it! [and he tosses one down on the table, hard] That wasn't right either!

[jumps, startled, at his outburst]

What are you trying to do?

[draws closer to see]

[lets her, as he flips over a card, and then flips it again to change it's face]

Trying to cycle through the entire deck, but I keep getting some of the cards mixed up.

[A detective novel makes its way over the edge of the table first, followed a second later by a mug of coffee. Last to appear is Conan, climbing up onto the chair which is still far too low for him.]

Practicing? [It's more greeting than question.]

[Nods in response, opening his book and picking up his coffee cup. He doesn't start to read immediately, however, watching Kaito flip through the cards, trying to pinpoint what exactly he's doing.]

[If Conan watches carefully, the sleight becomes rather obvious. As he flips the cards, he's palming them carefully in his hand and exchanging them for another from up his sleeve. The movement is so fast that anyone not looking for it would miss it completely.

This, obviously, is a completely different brand of magic than what he was doing in the library]

[Conan is looking for it -- and finds it rather comforting. He's not forgotten the library, although he hasn't made up his mind what to think of that.

Once he's sure he's got Kaito's trick worked out, he settles down to read.]

Aren't card tricks a little easy?

Depends on the card trick. This one is a little more complex.
