[You can smell smoke.

This is not usually a good development, so it's natural that no matter where you are in the mansion, you'd stop what you're doing and look around. Maybe glance towards the open window and catch sight of a plume of grey smoke in the distance. Glancing out of the window, you can see that there is a small -- shed? shack? At this distance it's hard to tell -- building erected on the lawn.

In front of it a small campfire is burning brightly. There's no sign of anyone tending it. Do you invest--

I hadn't thought such a thing was possible. Even devils have their differences.

What's a devil?

A creature of Hell. We often do business dealings with them. They can be very suave and polite... but they aren't to be trusted with souls.

That seems logical.

What's a soul?

A soul is the core of yourself; what makes a person a person. It's also the part of you that ascends to Heaven or descends to Hell upon your death. Without it you are little more than a husk of your former self. It's a tragic condition to be soulless.

Yes, exactly. It's rather difficult to explain.

Is it only people?

[The dining room. Conan holds tightly on to Ran's hand as they enter, but the expected scolding doesn't come. Instead he slowly weighs the amount of food spread out in front of them with a distinctly troubled air.]

Devils certainly don't have them. It's fairly certain that clay men don't. Rubbery men... mm, there's some debate there.

...Is something the matter?

There's no one here. To eat this food.

[Conan lets go of Ran's hand to count the number of seats in the dining room, weighing them against plates and volume of food on the table.]

There are some people, they simply aren't about at the moment. Some days are busier than others.

But there's more food than there is seats or plates! No one could possibly eat all of that in a day ... It'll spoil!

[Guess who is getting stressed about this.]

Ah, that's one of the strange things about this place. The food never spoils, or runs out. It's always replaced by some mysterious means when no one is looking.

But if there's so much and they don't need to worry about it--

[Why do they have to work so hard to harvest and send food to Inside? Is it all a lie ... ?]

Do bear in mind that it's only this way in the Mansion. Where I come from, food can be quite hard to come by and most certainly spoils.

But that's not right! It should be for everyone!

Very true. But the magic here works in peculiar ways.

It's possible there's another solution but no one's been able to discover one yet.

[That prospect was a lot more comforting and after a moment, Conan nodded coming over to rejoin Ran.]

You aren't hungry?

[Conan shakes his head. He's not sure how to articulate how he feels about the surplus food and the supplies no one can explain.]

I'm not hungry for their food.

Is it like this place?

To a degree. There are ingredients as well as tools.
