There is, in a hallway, a small child. He looks to be about seven years old. He looks to be a Kaito. He also looks rather confused and lost and startled.

He isn't going to introduce himself as Kuroba Kaito though, and he isn't going to be performing any magic tricks for you.

Hoooooold on, back up.

The grin was gone, and Kaito was now studying the smaller version of him curiously. "The apparent murder of Kuroba Kaito," he repeated, his tone not a question, but a statement, "What happened?"

"What's it look like?"

"You faked your death?! Even Kudo didn't do that!"

"It was just how the timing worked out."

"What about mom? Jii-chan? Aoko?"

"Mom and Jii-chan know."

"... and Aoko doesn't know for the same reasons Ran-san doesn't."

It made sense, he would have done the same thing but it still left a very bitter taste in his mouth.

"Yeah."

A pause.

"Y'know, where I come from, Aoko knows about Kaitou Kid."

"How'd that happen?"

"She found out on accident. I filled in the blanks, once she was calm enough to listen to me again." A wry grin.

"Were there broken bones involved, or did you go into hiding?"

"Neither, actually." A shrug, nonchalant. "I thought I'd have to go into hiding, but she was surprisingly understanding."

He lifted an eyebrow at his other curiously. "Something for you to think about. It'll hurt her less if you tell her."

"I don't think it could hurt her any more."

"You'll seem honest with her if you tell her."

"I'll get her killed if I tell her."

"My Aoko knows and she's still alive."

"Are they watching your house, trying to make sure you're dead?"

There's a beat as Kaito thinks this over.

"She doesn't live at your house, does she?"

"No, but if she found out I wasn't dead, that'd be the first place she'd go."

"Not if you told her not to. She's not an idiot."

Clearly this Kaito has better experiences with her knowing than her not knowing.

"Any change in her behavior would draw attention. It's been three months. Any word from me is going to cause her to act differently."

And maybe he sounds a bit like a detective there, but then again, three months of being Edogawa Maurice had changed him a bit.

Kaito noticed this change in demeanor, and he frowned. "You sound like a detective."

"I've been tantei-kun's twin brother for three months. I think detectiveness is contagious."

"... it's like an illness. It just spreads."
