"Oi, Ran!" Here, Dressing Room, is a very aggrieved Conan, waving a school bag packed with karate paraphenalia and holding a lunch box. "You can't go to the tournament without your stuff! ... geez, do I have to do everything around -- here?"

He nodded at the other detective's last statement. "That's what happened to you too?"

It still didn't explain why Kudo had insisted he was supposed to be a girl.

Conan stared at Hattori wordlessly a moment. "He said this would happen," he said finally. "Yes, he's here."

He looked around the lobby, pointing to the door he'd come in by. "Left the Agency, walked in through that door here. It opens onto garden now." He put his hands in his pockets, trying to get his head around the extreme weirdness of the situation. Hattori was a boy. And knew who he was. This was --

"There's a logical explanation somewhere. There has to be."

"Yer gay?"

If somehow, Mouri Ran was male, it stood to reason that Kudo was gay. Kudo being in love with Neechan was a fact of the universe.

Sure. Logical explanation. Somehow. Possibly.

"A comment I could have happily done without." Really, dealing with Hattori was complicated enough without having to defend his sexuality too. It was almost enough to make Conan think twice about returning her calls.

Almost.

"What's the date on your phone say?"

"Well, 'f Neechan's a guy, it's not that hard ta figure out."

He shrugged, pulled out his phone and tossed it to the other detective. "'f it hasn't been messed wi', it should say August fifth."

"Don't say that around Ran unless you want a broken nose or something," Conan said catching the phone and flipping it open. He tilted his head to the main doors behind him, the one's he and Ran had investigated earlier. "Open those doors and tell me if you think that's August weather," he said as he recorded the date in his notebook.

"'m just sayin'..." A slightly teasing tone, heading for the door.

And closing that door now because a gust of snow just blew in.

"What th' hell?"

"Not hell," Conan said absently, checking to see if Hattori's phone was any luckier with reception than his was before holding it out to Hattori. "Not unless the survival rate of snowflakes there have been greatly misrepresented."

"You don't feel the effects of a prolonged period of drugged captivity?"

"That would'a been th' first thing I noticed, and no, I feel fine."

"So do I. Which means we can rule out a straight abduction, at least for now."

"Kidnapped ta a mansion? A mansion with snow in th' middle of summer? This isn't ever gonna show up on a police report. Nobody'd believe it."

"The more impossible the situation, the bigger the challenge." Conan said. "Don't tell me you're not excited--" He hesitated a moment over the suffix. "Hattori-kun."

"Of course 'm excited, Kudo. -kun."

Using a suffix was awkward, but this wasn't Kudo. Not the Kudo he knew. If that made any sense.

"Then you're not too different from the Hattori I know." The suffix made perfect sense to Conan, the slight distinction acting like something of a buffer. "Ran said there are other people here. He's apparently been here three weeks -- long enough to be convinced that this place exists between dimensions and the people here really are from alternate worlds. I'm withholding judgement until I've investigated further."

Conan snorted. "I wouldn't make up something this dumb," he said sourly. "Go on. Ask me anything."

"Anything I ask would be related ta me knowing who you are. 'n you were surprised when I called ya Kudo. A question isn't gonna work."

Conan tilted his head, considering this. "A question worked for me," he pointed out. "We've investigated together, after all. But even if I can't answer it, knowing what other differences there are might be useful."

A long pause, trying to figure out something that this Kudo would know.

"Detective Koshien. You, me, 'n Hakuba all pinned someone different as th' culprit at first. Who'd we pick?"

"It's funny you should choose the Koshien. This place -- the longer you're here, the more you're reminded of it," Conan said, approving. "You went for Kouya-san first, Koshimizu-san second. Hakuba blamed Tsuchio-san. I was sure it was Koshimizu-san, but I don't remember having the chance to tell you that?"

A nod. "I accused Kouya-han, then Hakuba butted in an' accused Tsuchio-han, an' then you explained how th' trick was done an' showed us both up."
