Nine minutes, thirty-one seconds.

[one hand is in his pocket, fingering the pocketwatch there, keeping track of the time he's been in the dressing room. His gaze is restless as he looks around, keeping a constant lookout for movement, for a person - or people - as he explores]

[he looks just like any Saguru you might meet at a crossroads. Perhaps the shadows under his eyes are a little darker than normal, but he's probably just had a few late nights chasing a thief]

Once he has a contract, that person will die. It's just a matter of time.

[looks at Shinichi steadily]

And I say that as the leading expert on 1412 - those people will die.

What are the conditions of the contract?

It's... a confirmation of accepting a kill.

There's nothing binding except what he gives it - but he rarely kills without one. I can count on one hand the number of deaths he's directly caused when he hasn't accepted a contract.

Except what he gives it? How can you say he accepts it then?

He says he does. Usually, 'I accept your contract' is it. Or just 'I accept' if he's been discussing it for a while - it's possible he has to make sure someone knows that they've made one with him.

Well, I didn't. Maybe I should be making sure he knows that.

Not that they're making. That they've made a contract.

If he said the words 'contract', or said, 'I accept', that's enough for him.

I just hope that none of that organisation have found their way here.

Even so -- that language ... [He's going to have to talk to 1412 again.]

[again, a small twinge of worry and guilt at Shinichi's negative answer, but he ignores it]

That language? [he raises an eyebrow, curious. has this Shinichi thought of something? Perhpas being dead affords him with other avenues of research than the norm]

The Kaitou Kid in my world is a thief. Well -- master thief to give him his due, and he is very clear on what he's due. [ There's something in that which is not professional respect, but Shinichi's shifting gears rapidly, interested. ] Was there ever a Kid in your world?

Never. I have a theory about 1412 - a second person taking up his work, evidenced by the sudden irregularity of his methods, and the gap between the two.

[He says iregualrity instead of madness out of habit, and self-preservation. You don't last very long around 1412 if you don't]

Two 1412, but never a Kid.

[Shinichi frowns, mulling over the implications of that.] That seems like a pretty big difference.

One Kid, One 1412 - I haven't found evidence for my theory that the police will accept, yet.

...And at least this 'Kid' isn't as likely to be as dramatic in his choice of wardrobe.

What do you mean by that?

An assassin who wears white.

Need I point out the ridiculousness of that?

I don't know. Black's been overdone.

Bloodstains show up far too well on white.

[a short, humourless laugh]

I was once able to deduce how he'd killed someone by the stains on his suit.

[Both of those statements are -- unexpected from Hakuba. Not the Hakuba he knows, Shinichi reminds himself. Not the one that Kid's told you about. It might be too late for caution, but he reminds himself to be careful anyway.]

Of course. You're a detective -- not 1412's launderer.

[Sometimes I feel like I should be - the thought snaps to the forefront of his mind, along with memeories of cases he's attended where 1412 has been -waiting- for him, smiling.]

Clearing up after him amounts to the same thing, Kudo-kun.

[Cleaning up? It's not an analogy Shinichi would use, but he can see how it might appeal and relaxes slightly.]

A tough job, but somebody has to do it?

Precisely.

Nakamori and his men were doing well enough before I came - I suppose my presence gives them something of a well-needed break.

[He's thought about quitting, but only to entertain the thought - 1412 would follow him, he's almost sure of it. And that would be worse than the alternative of staying.]
