The worst thing about having a broken leg, Conan decided, was that it was impossible to open some doors in the mansion. He wanted to go outside and naturally, the handles on the massive lobby doors were just out of his reach.

"January? That's a long time -- you've gone home since, right?"

Have a 'Ran I know you're not that stupid' look.

"I just got this cast on last week. The most the infirmary has for something like this is a splint."

"Really?" Ran reconsiders. She's never had cause to become acquainted with broken bones (itself unusual given her background in martial arts). "I thought it looked pretty well stocked ... but then I've never been inside a hospital to compare against."

"Not unless it got stocked better since 1412 nearly broke my wrist."

"You're that Conan? He's -- really a villain then?" Nothing slow about Ran's response here.

"He knifed me, tried to break my wrist, broke three of my ribs, and knocked me out." Pretty self-explanatory. He wasn't going to mention that he had instigated the fight.

Knifed him-- and Conan said he didn't need protecting. Ran mentally resolved to stop complaining about the bugs. Far far better that Conan could contact her whenever he needed -- even better if she got a hold of one of his locators herself ... "What differentiates him in appearance from other Kids?"

"Nothing physically." The same white tuxedo, "All the differences are mental."

Ran frowned. That -- could pose problems. "1412 -- have you seen him since? Heard of him recently?"

[just_add_aptx]

"No, I haven't. But I haven't been back for very long, so it doesn't really mean anything."

[ran_of_steel]

"I see ..." Ran suddenly collected herself. "I'm sorry, Conan. I can't imagine you want to talk about this."

"It doesn't bother me, it's just a case."

[ran_of_steel]

"Does this happen often?" Ran asked, frowning at the cast.

[just_add_aptx]

"Not too often, no. I just had some bad luck."

[ran_of_steel]

"Well that's something ..." Ran frowned, mulling over the implications.

"What do you mean, Ran-neechan?"

[ran_of_steel]

"I don't like thinking of you ... of any Conan ... in a situation where they're getting hurt on a regular basis," Ran explained. "That's not really a surprise, is it?"

"It's not really a regular basis. Ran-neechan's able to protect me, and I'm careful."

"You said that already."

[just_add_aptx]

"And I'm going to keep saying it until you believe me."

"You only need to worry if those Conans don't have their Ran."
