[Event] Whatever you do, don't high-five

Your hands look normal, feel normal, and even smell normal. There's nothing out of the ordinary... Except when you touch something (or someone) else~

You'll start leaving handprints, fingerprints, streaks of colour along the walls, furniture, and along other people's skin. There's a different colour for every different person, and who knows what happens when you high-five?

"A talent I never even knew I had." Sonoko traced a line across the wall, all thought of getting in trouble for vandalising forgotten. "Nice to meet you -- wait, Mouri Ran? What are the odds! My best friend's name is Mouri Ran as well."

Ran giggled at Sonoko. Then started to draw again on the wall herself. She then stopped and turned to the older girl next to her. "That can't be right, I don't have any cousins that have the same name as me. And it would be really creepy if another Mouri family has a daughter with the same name as me."

"Ran's a guy," Sonoko said. "You might not be related at all." Though it really was a bit too much of a coincidence. "Your friend Shinichi ... surname's not Kudou, right?"

Ran let out a sigh of relief, then went back to her drawing. Sonoko had gotten her spooked for a moment. Hearing her speak again, she glanced up. "Yup! Kudou Shinichi, son of a writer and actress!" She then turned to make another figure.

As Ran went back to her drawing, Sonoko just stared. No way. That was too much to be coincidence. Which meant--

Identity theft? Nah, too young. Besides would a criminal come to a detective convention? Wait -- convention! That was it!

Cosplayers do start young these days, Sonoko thought, crouching down to talk to 'Ran' once more. "So your friends, Sonoko and Shinichi, they here too?" she asked.

Ran stared at what she wanted to call 'Crazy Lady' and shook her head. "Nope! I don't think they are. I'm lost and I wanna go back home to Mom and Dad. Dad is a police man though, so he should be here soon." She frowned at the thought of her dad looking everywhere for her and shut her eyes for a moment.

"Don't worry, kid," Sonoko assured her. "I'm sure he'll be here soon enough."

"Weird." Ran had turned to idly doodling stick figures on the wall, combating each other with various karate techniques. "But... that's only three people, right? That doesn't mean that everyone will forget."

Even as he said it, though, he knew the odds weren't very high.

"Mature-me said that he thought seeing me here would be good for my Ran, even if she didn't remember," Shinichi said slowly, one handprint forming where his hand had come to a halt. "He said even if you didn't remember, the feeling of being able to say goodbye, the finality -- that stays with you even if the memories don't."

She nodded before wiping her eyes. "Thank you," She murmured quietly before opening her eyes and blinking. Looking up at the lady she realized something. " You look like a older version of my friend; Sonoko."

That was a weird thing for the kid to say. Surely she should recognise the people she and her friends were cosplaying as? Sonoko stared down at Ran, a sudden thought occurring to her.

For someone who didn't have any cousins, the resemblance to Sonoko's best friend was rather surprising. "I got a photo of my Ran and Shinichi on my phone," she said, pulling it out. "Want to see -- oh this paint had better not last!" Ignoring the blue she was leaving on her celphone, Sonoko found a snap of the three friends together at the highschool, Ran and Shinichi in the boy's uniform, Sonoko wearing the girls, all grinning and waving at the camera. "There!"

Ran blinked and looked at the picture. "That person looks alot like Shinichi." She said pointing to Shinchi in the photo. "Except he's older." She then looked at the other person. "I don't know who that person is. Not a clue. And that person is you right?" She pointed to the picture of Sonoko and thought for a moment. "The person in this picture has the same smile as Shinichi too. What did you say his name was?" She asked with a small frown. All of this talk was really hurting the first grader's head.

"Shinichi," Sonoko said helplessly. "His name is Shinichi." She felt just as lost as little Ran. None of this made sense --

"Wait! My Ran -- him in the photo there -- he said this place is -- special. Something about other dimensions that I was really paying attention to ... maybe this is what he meant? That people come here from worlds where things are different?"

Ran thought for a moment,"Yeah, that must be it." Her head hurt to much to think anymore, so she decided to go ahead with what Sonoko said. She turned to what she was drawing and drew another stick figure, "There that's you!" She said with a small smile.

"Glad we figured that out," Sonoko said, fishing out her handkerchief and trying to wipe the paint off her phone. She stared in disgust at her now paint splattered handkerchief before giving up with a sigh.

"That's me, huh? You're not bad at this." Sonoko considered both the drawing and little Ran a moment. "You know, this is actually pretty cool. I now have two best friends!"

He wasn't the type to finish other people's sentences. He didn't work like that unless he was solving a case. Usually he just left potential murderers with enough implied motives and vague ideas that they finished their crimes themselves. Not his fault.

"Yes, Kuroba?"

Ran nodded and smiled, "Thank you!" She spoke gleefully and giggled quietly. She then looked up at Sonoko. " Two best friends?" She questioned, quite confused on what she meant.

"Yup!" Sonoko held up one finger, standing in what was known in other universes as her Sonoko-the-great pose. "My Ran -- best friend number one! And number two--" She blinked at the little girl. "Can I call you Ran-chan?"

Ran smiled," Sure! I'll call you Sonoko-oneechan." She was happy that she found someone that she could be friends with, seeing as how she hadn't met many other people.

"Fine by me!" Sonoko grinned. Really, this kid was too cute -- but then that was Ran in any form. A worrying thought occurred to her -- was the Sonoko in this Ran's world into girls? No, Sonoko caught herself. She was only a shogakkou student -- far, far too early to be worrying about that. "So, Ran-chan! What are your hobbies?"

Ran thought for a moment," My hobbies? I like playing with Shinichi and Sonoko, and I like drawing, exploring, reading is sometimes fun." She stopped to think again. " I'm also thinking about taking karate!" She blurted out happily. "What about you?"

"I bet you'll enjoy it," Sonoko said, resisting the urge to ruffle Ran's hair -- with the paint marks they were leaving, that was a really bad idea. "My Ran loves it! And he's really good -- school champion! District champion too!"

"Me? Let's see -- obviously hanging around with Ran, and I guess Shinichi too, isn't that bad ... but I like fashion, shopping and music!" Sonoko paused. Was the Sonoko in this Ran's world going to get to take her shopping when they grew up? Having a girl friend to do stuff like that with -- she was almost jealous.

Ran's eyes shone, " Really! He must be really,really good! I would like to meet him sometime. Maybe he can help me learn while I'm waiting for my Dad to find me!"

Ran blinked and then smiled," Really? My Sonoko likes shopping too, I go with her sometimes, but I don't like how she always tries to give me really expensive things."

"He's the best! I always go to his competitions to cheer him on!" Sonoko said eagerly. "It's really exciting, even if I'm not into that sort of thing myself." She looked at her phone, txting another new message. "I'll see if he's nearby. I bet he'd like to meet you too."

"My Ran says the same -- says he doesn't feel right taking things from me when he can't do the same for me in return. He's really sweet and thoughtful like that! Most people wouldn't even care. But that's how I know he's my best friend -- even if he drives me nuts sometimes."

Ran nodded, "Thank you so much, Sonoko-oneesan!" She shouted hugging her leg, since that was all she could reach up too.

Ran smiled," I feel bad when Sonoko gets me these really expensive birthday gifts, so I always tell her just to make me a simple card or something." She stopped to think. " I wonder if I drive my Sonoko nuts..."
